Waterproof Duffel Box: For Gear That Rides Outside

Waterproof Duffel Box: For Gear That Rides Outside

Posted by Alex Hunt on

Some gear lives inside the vehicle, while other gear rides on the roof, in the truck bed, on the deck of a boat or strapped to the back of a sled. Those are the places where rain, mud, dust and snow are part of the deal, and the new RUX Waterproof Duffel Box is ready to hold up its end of the bargain by keeping your gear protected from the elements.

It uses the same wide-mouth opening, segmented roll-top and modular design of the original RUX Duffel Box and adds a waterproof RF welded construction that's designed to keep water and dust out. While it's built for wet conditions and exposure to the elements, it's not intended for prolonged submersion.

How it seals

After the Duffel Box is packed, press the air out, roll the patent-pending segmented roll-top three times, then buckle it over the top or down the sides to the lower clips on the outside of the bag. The result is a tight waterproof and dustproof seal without a zipper, creating a barrier between your gear and the weather.

"Most expedition duffels use a long zipper for wide access, and the zipper is the first place water gets in and the first thing to fail. We built it around our wide mouth packing concept, chose a roll-top you close in three turns rather than a zipper, and RF-welded the seams instead of sewing them. The bag that stands open on a wet tailgate is the same bag that keeps the weather out once it's rolled."

Tony Richardson, Co-Founder and Chief Design Officer, RUX

Built for the wet

The Duffel Box's body uses 840-denier nylon coated with TPU on both faces. The polyurethane-based coating provides the waterproof layer while maintaining flexibility and resisting rot, delamination and cracking in cold conditions.

The roll-top hood uses 420D TPU-coated nylon that is RF welded to the body. Instead of stitching the panels together, RF welding fuses the panels into one piece, eliminating needle holes that can lead to leaks in the waterproof construction.

The material is heavier than the standard Duffel Box and the Duffel Box MultiCam. The added weight comes from the coated fabric and reinforced construction required to protect your gear when the weather turns.

Built from the bottom up

The bottom combines a honeycomb stiffener and 3mm of foam, covered in 420D TPU-coated nylon. The added structure helps the Duffel Box stand open while you pack, even on wet ground, keeping the contents visible and both hands free.

That added structure also gives the bag a more stable base when it's sitting in the back of a truck, on a boat deck or anywhere else your gear might encounter slippery or uneven ground.

Still a RUX Duffel Box

For all the changes to the material, the Waterproof Duffel Box still works across the system like all RUX products. The internal rails let you configure the bag around the gear you're used to carrying. On the exterior, the Hypalon Lashpoint system provides places to attach gear and secure your load. Two tote handles make it easy to grab and move, while two removable padded shoulder straps provide a backpack-style carry option when you're ready to travel farther.

The 55L ($340 USD) size, which is airline carry-on capable in Burrito Mode (airline rules vary), is the right size for two to four days of travel. The larger 75L ($390 USD) version is great for longer trips, bulky gear, or when one load is shared between two people. No matter which size Duffel Box suits your needs, you can take advantage of the cross-functional Organizer Panel (30x30 or 40x30), Pocket 6L, Cube 10L and Bag 25L to help organize the interior into sections.

Waterproof. Dustproof. RUX.

The Waterproof Duffel Box is for the gear that doesn't ride inside. Load it into the truck bed, take it onto the boat or strap it to the sled. When your gear has to spend the day outside, the Waterproof Duffel Box welcomes the rougher ride.
